In spite of popular belief, Windows XP is still the top operating system in the world based upon user market. All device drivers must conform to Microsoft. Without the appropriate windows drivers hardware like video cards, audio cards, hard drives, DVD or cd rom, webcam and monitors would not function with the operating system Windows XP. This makes it tough for manufacturers who do not conform as Microsoft does not easily give their codes unless you are developing something for their system.

One of the good things that Microsoft does is that they offer a very wide range of device drivers on their update site, more so than any other operating system. Though that is the case, not all devices are supported on their update site. Let's say the Microsoft update site does not have the driver for a particular device you may have installed and you are having difficulty finding the manufacturer of the device online - there is now software which will do this for you. Before you get discouraged and think that there is something fatal with your computer, type in the error message you are having into Google and see what they come back with. A lot of the computer or systems problem you are having due to lack of updates of your windows drivers. Once you update your drivers, your system will function as it is supposed to without the costly help of a computer repair shop. Though there may be a time you need the services of a computer repair shop, some of the maintenance work can be done by you by simply keeping all your original disks and by keeping all your drivers updated using software to help.
